Gardens

Hello and Welcome!

As I was looking at my blog, I realized that gardening takes up a lot of it and so I thought it deserved its own page. Some of these garden areas don't look the same anymore, but I thought it was fun to look back at them. Some have changed due to our needs and others have changed because of the 8 miniature dinosaurs in the backyard (our girls).

Starting off is one of my favorite pictures of what I call "Lily's Garden". It started with all of it being grass and one giant daisy plant, that is no longer there, and a few lilies and one hydrangea plant when our own Miss Lily was born in 2009. It then got raised beds, smaller beds, and a rock path. And lots of flowers.

After Lily's Garden continued to flourish, I realized the rest of the yard could change too. I put out a plea for galvanized containers and my parents delivered with the help of local farmers. This is one area the chickens have all but destroyed and I'm scheming up new ideas for the planters this summer.

Another area that saw some major changes was an unused area behind the garage. It was turned into a fun cacti garden but then winter in Missouri came and even though I tried to winter over the plants, most died. 11 years later and it's completely changed and has been a part of the vegetable garden since the year this was made. I want to recreate it though now that I know more about plants and have better skills.

And in the summer of 2018, I added a bunch of herbs and transplanted flowers to the kids' area of the backyard. It didn't last long except some of the herbs went crazy. The lemongrass survived and became an amazing spot for the chickens to hide under. Some plants will be planted again, others not so much.

And to leave it off, is the one area of the yard that hadn't seen much done to it - the south side between our house and neighbor's driveway that's narrow. It's changed since this photo and may change more this year. I'm not sure. But we repurposed some feed buckets, added our tomatoes and other plants and have since added more herbs, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and flowers to this area. It's the perfect area as it gets full sun.

The front yard has a raised bed with blueberry bushes and strawberries! The backyard gardens are always changing so check back for more of those updates. AND, I'll be adding more flowers and garden areas that are near the photo above that run the length of the house. It's full sun so the perfect spot for veggies and sun loving plants! I hope to find some more containers but am waiting on hearing from a few farmers. Wish me luck!
